Switzerland

Hello again! We have just spent an amazing few days in Lauterbrunnen which is one of the mountain villages in Switzerland. It was incredible and we were lucky to have pretty good weather which meant we got a lot of walking in! This is a pretty short blog because both of our two full days were filled with long walks!

We travelled from Como to Lucerne and then caught another train to Interlaken and a final train to Lauterbrunnen. The journey from Lucern to Lauterbrunnen was stunning with mountains and lakes the whole way. The train even went up some pretty steep hills which was cool! We were pleased to finally arrive in Lauterbrunnen after a long day of travelling and were even more pleased when our hostel was only a few minutes walk from the train station.

We got settled in and decided to go to the supermarket to get some food for dinner. Wow Switzerland is expensive! Our home cooked meal cost us about NZ$45! All good, the views over the next few days would be worth it!

Day One

We had read a few blogs about what to do in Lauterbrunnen and on our first day we decided to do a hike which was mainly up hill. We caught the train to a town called Wengen where we were to begin our walk up to Männlichen. There was a gondola which would take us there in 6 minutes but we had heard the views were amazing on the walk so we just went for the cheaper option!

The walk did have amazing views, but it was very difficult. We walked up hill for 2 and a half hours and we were so tired by the time we got to the top! Thankfully you can’t see the gondola from most of the walk so we didn’t have that mocking us the whole way.

The view in Männlichen was incredible! Mountains in every direction. We found a spot to have lunch which we had carried up with us. It was a great lunch location!

After lunch we had a bit more energy to do the 15 minute Royal Walk which takes you to a viewing platform up the top of a hill. The view from here was amazing as well. We were loving it!

There are a few walks from Männlichen which are popular and are a lot easier than what we did, but we were exhausted! We decided that we had seen enough for today so we took the gondola back down to Wengen.

Once back down, we walked into Lauterbrunnen which was about 40 minutes. It was mostly downhill which ended up being difficult as well! We really needed a flat walk at some stage. We loved it though and once we got back to the hostel we felt like we had had a good day of walking!

Day Two

For our second day, we decided that we would take the gondola up to the mountains on the other side of the Lauterbrunnen valley and do a walk from there. So we got a gondola to Grütschalp and walked towards Winteregg. We stopped there and had lunch which we had packed again. It was another awesome spot with mountains in front of us!

We then continued on towards Mürren. The views the whole way along were amazing. There were so many waterfalls, glaciers, and mountains.

We ended up taking an extremely long route back to Lauterbrunnen via Gimmelwald and Stechelberg. All up we walked 17km!

Once we finally got back to the hostel we were shattered and enjoyed a quiet evening relaxing. I spent some time going through photos and we made ourselves another home made meal.

This was an extremely quick tour of Lauterbrunnen and Switzerland in general. We loved it and we hope that we can go back one day with more hiking gear and more time! There is so much to do, and there are so many more towns to discover.

Bye for now! 👋🏻
